Project Abstract:

The Joint Medical Workstation (JMEWS) project is a program of record funded by the Theater Medical Information Program (TMIP). It is currently going through a systems development life cycle, a project management technique that divides complex projects into smaller, more easily managed segments or phases. It is the objective of this research to study how to support the team in the development stage. One of the tasks is to secure JMEWS development servers. Since JMEWS is a government project, it is imperative that the Security Technical Implementation Guidelines (STIGS) by the Defense Information Security Agency (DISA) be used. Specific procedures for every component of the operating system are outlined in the Windows 2003 STIGS. Every measure in the STIGS can protect the development servers from unauthorized access. Once all the procedures in the STIGS are considered and applied, tests in the form of Security Readiness Review Scripts (SRRS) are run to verify compliance to security. These SRRS are unlicensed tools developed by the Field Security Office (FSO) of the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). Tests are done by running these tools on each server that needs to be checked. Results of the tests indicate the security readiness of the development server. Another task at hand is to research how Java programs can be stored in the database that stores information related to military patients. With the two tasks listed above, the development of the JMEWS project is supported by completing one of project’s security requirements and by storing previously coded Java programs into the database that will simplify the coding tasks of the development team. The JMEWS project, in this case, has undergone initiation, planning, and design. The development phase is currently underway while the testing, implementation, and maintenance phases are soon to follow.
